39 wks, still evacuated
First, a hurricane update. Many New Orleans residents still do not have power; most, in fact, but it is starting to trickle in. Those evacuated are still encouraged to stay away until power is restored. Further south and west, however, there's awful destruction (like in the Thibodaux where we grew up before moving to TX), and any sense or normalcy will take weeks+months.
Our family has not been hurting, praise God! Ginny & Ryan are being so gracious about having us here and letting us all invade their space. They're even both working from home, so they really have almost no respite from the busyness and noise of 4 kids, poor things. We have, however, certainly kept busy and tried to get the kids out of the house at least once everyday, keeping Covid in mind, too. (Gosh, evacuation, Covid, baby-waiting; so many things!) And post-naps are spent in their blow-up pool or watching TV or movies that they only get at family's <3.
So, to our week! After that NASA adventure on Monday that I reported last time, Ginny, Mom, Dylan, the kids, and I took the lightrail metro downtown to catch a movie! In an actual movie theater! It'd been years for Dylan and me, anyway, and we were one of two parties in the whole theater, so that felt comfortable. What did we see? Oh, it doesn't really matter, it was so fun to see the kids excited about the metro and the theater and popcorn and huge screen ... but, oh man, Jack and Pip. Everyone enjoyed Paw Patrol the Movie, but Jack and Pippa were such joys to watch!Wednesday brought back a bit of calm to the children's routine because we spent an hour or so at the local library two blocks down ... and checked out the maximum 50 books! The whole afternoon was quieter with less bickering. They're so used to having books and stories to get wrapped up in, but without that, they'd just been at each other! Exhausting. And Dad left for MS with all the Braud critters. They'd never lost power, so he was happy to head back home to check on things and offer an A/C'd home to Peter and Carrie who are still without. But Mom stayed on with us to potentially help with bébé.
Thursday, we took advantage of the Houston Museum of Natural Science free afternoon to check out their amazing dinosaur collection. An employee who was about to take off for the day even happened upon us and gave us a short, personalized tour with some excellent extra facts not found on the plaques.
Saturday, mom and Gin gave Dylan and me an afternoon away! We drove what felt like an absurd distance "just" for lunch, but now that we know why an Algiers Point friend recommended this particular Indian restaurant, we consider it totally worth it. Totally. So. The restaurant is called Maharaja Bhog, and it's in an unsuspecting strip mall because Houston... and it was fantastic. We both had so much fun with a new food experience, the Thali presentation, and got the chance to remember that that's one of our favorite things to adventure together. We were the only white people in the entire, full space. This morning, Sunday, brought us to another nearby church, Immaculate Conception - last week was Our Lady of Guadalupe - and afterwards, Gin treated us to ice cream and housemade popsicles on the way home. Happy 39 weeks, little Baby Cinco!Baby actions? Well. Not too much happening, but more than nothing? I don't know. It's down to *it could be today* or *it could be another week!* And so we wait and tick along. Basically it comes down to when power comes back on at home and when baby wants to move. We're set to deliver here in Houston, in which case we'd wait a couple days before traveling back, assuming we have power. Or the power comes on before baby's arrival, in which case we might head back for a "Plan A(-ish)" delivery in N.O. Either way, we're hopeful for a smooth delivery in a safe place, which is what counts.
